Guidelines for Sabbatical Applications
I. Statement of Purpose and Objectives

Describe your project clearly and specifically in words and concepts accessible to all faculty in the college of arts and sciences. The description should include: (1) an explicit statement of purpose for the project, (2) an outline of your training, background, and previous academic work that prepares you to complete this particular project, and (3) suggestions on how the project will contribute to knowledge, or develop your teaching skills, or develop the curriculum, or all three.

II. Plan of Action

A. The Plan

Set up a specific plan and timeline for the execution of this project. Map out how you will spend your time, at least month-by-month.

If this project includes graduate study, you must indicate the institution for study, the courses you will take, and the degree(s) to be completed.
If this project involves a new professional development area, state what preparations will be necessary for completion of the project.

B. Supportive Documents

Submit a two-page summary curriculum vitae. Other documents that might lend support to the feasibility of your project include:

Letters from prospective supervisors or employers

Copies of grant proposals for external funding

Copies of letters from outside evaluators who know your research or teaching expertise

Letters that demonstrate you will be able to obtain access to or cooperation from a supporting institution, archive, library, studio, etc.

III. Outcomes

Professional Benefits (include all of the following that apply to your project):

Suggest the utility that this project will have for wider audiences including, for example, members of your department, other departments, other campuses, and scholars.

State your plan to propose papers or panels for conferences.

State your plan to submit articles or books for publication or works for exhibit, performance, etc.

Describe the new skills you will develop for teaching (use of technology, new information, etc.)

University Benefits (include all of the following that apply to your project):

State your plan to share the outcome of your sabbatical via the lecture series, an exhibit, presentations, revised syllabi, new courses, redesigned course of study, etc.

Final form: Describe the final form of the project:

IV. Previous Sabbaticals

Required: a summary report of your previous sabbatical that includes:

(1) The previous statement of purpose and objectives from your most recent sabbatical.

(2) A list of the actual outcome(s) of the sabbatical. (Compare what you originally proposed with what you were able to achieve.)
