Degree Requirements

A candidate for an undergraduate degree is expected to fulfill the requirements for graduation stated in the university bulletin at the time of admission or readmission to Capital University. The general requirements for a baccalaureate degree are:

  • Meet all University Core Curriculum and major(s) requirements.
    NOTE: Students who previously graduated from Capital University and return to seek an additional degree are not subject to any new core requirements unless it is a requirement of their current major. Students who received a Bachelor of General Studies degree under the old core requirements (prior to 1989 for incoming freshmen; prior to 1990 for transfer students) are required to take that portion of the new university core not covered by his/her previous course work.

  • Have a minimum cumulative and major* grade point average of 2.00 and the requisite number of semester hours completed successfully. For the College of Arts and Sciences all degrees offered require a minimum of 124 semester credit hours.
  • *Grade point average minimums for majors may vary - see specific major requirements.

Degree Completion

To be eligible for a degree the student must fulfill each of the following:

  • complete application for graduation at the time specified by the university registrar but no later than one semester prior to the date of expected graduation;
  • have met or be registered for all remaining requirements (both for the major(s) and the University Core) for the degree in the final semester;
  • have no incompletes on the academic record;
  • have the sufficient number of semester hours at the time of graduation and at least a minimum of a 2.00 for both the cumulative and major* grade point average at the time of graduation.
    *(Note: Minimum grade point average requirement may vary for specific majors.)
  • Only students who have met all academic requirements of the university will be eligible for graduation. All financial obligations to the university must be cleared before a student can receive the diploma.
  • have completed all university assessment measures as specified by the Center for Academic Achievement. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the assessment battery administered to entering freshmen and other measures as may be administered to students during their sophomore and senior years.
